Weekly News

On Thursday the stabbing of a 30 year old woman by the hands of a local 44 year old man took place in North Yorkshire in Aldi.  Although the incident caused mass panic within the store, a few brave staff members and shoppers were able to detain the suspect before the police had arrived.

Unfortunately, although parametics tried to save her, 30 minutes after she passed away.  Investigations are still occurring and the family is receiving a lot of support from friends and the police officers.

As to why the woman was attacked is currently unknown, but it's sad to see another life lost to that of knife crime.

The source is from Press Association, the information from the source seems fairly unbiased and unprejudiced, so it seems fair to say that it gave a neutral stance on the matter.

Primark and Sports direct named for underpaying staff

Primark and Sports Direct have had to pay thousands back to staff for paying them below minimum wage.  Primark had to repay £231,973.12 mainly due to charging staff for uniforms, and Sports Direct and the two agencies it used had to pay back a total of £1.1M to their workers.  All firms said issues have been rectified.

  • 150,000 UK workers to get a pay rise
  • Sports Direct pay-row agency fine upheld
  • Football clubs "shamed" over low wages
The spokesperson for Primark said that they had reviewed its procedures to avoid the situation from reoccurring.  It is said that the average amount paid to the 10,000 staff was £23.75.

The minimum wage according to age should be;

£7.50-national living wage for over 25s
£7.05-for 21-24 years old.
£5.60-for 18-20 years old.
£4.05-for 16-17 years old.

According to sources the most common reasons for underpaid staff is; failing to pay staff for travel, overtime and deducting money for uniforms.

This brings awareness to the fact that some of us may be being unfairly underpaid as businesses are trying to make as much a profit as possible.  It unfortunate that even businesses that are usually successful are still underpaying their staff whilst not giving them benefits of any kind.  Hopefully, as time goes by this situation is 100% rectified and gradually ceases.  This can also be linked to issues of exploitation of workers/employees.

The source that the following information is from BBC News, this can be that of a certain bias based on the source.

Ratko Mladic jailed for life over Bosnia war genocide

The former Bosnian Serb has been sentenced for life for genocide and other atrocities in the 1990s Bosnian war.  He was known as the "Bosnian butcher", he led forces during the massacre of Bosnian muslims in Srebrenica and the siege of Sarajevo.  The Un tribunal convicted him on 10/11 charges.  However,  He had denied the charges and his lawyer said he would appeal.

He was charged with the murder of 7,000 plus men and boys. He was cleared of a second count of genocide in other municipalities.  Other charges included war crimes and crimes against humanity.

The crimes of troops under his crimes are as follows: Mass rapes of women and girls.  Keeping the people in inhumane conditions-starving, thirsty, sick and beating them. Terrorising civilians by bombing and shooting them and destroying their homes and mosques.

After 16 years on the run since the 1995 war, he was finally found in his cousin's house in Serbia in 2011.

In my opinion he deserved a harsher sentence due to all the atrocities he committed.  I hope that all the families that were severely affected by what Mladic did, have some sort of satisfaction or closure now that he has been caught and sentenced.  Overall, what he did is not that different to what happens in this day and age in certain parts of the world, just that these current events are not as severe and more covered up by the government.

Music Videos analysis

You and I-John Legend

This music video is a very positive and inspiring video for women of all ages, shapes, sizes, ethnicities, etc.  It represents a variety of women and girls and connotes that all women regardless of what they look like, their age, where they are from, etc are beautiful regardless.  It also shows the vulnerability of females, it makes the audience intrigued as to why these women are all of a sudden being depicted as so sad.  Very few men are shown in this video, except to show that they are supporting the females.  There is mostly use of full body and portrait shots, to mainly show facial expressions to evoke the desired emotions from the audience.  The lyrics of the song go in perfect harmony with the visuals of the video.  Overall, connoting that regardless of how women are viewed or depicted or the pressures that society tries to place upon us, we are all unique and beautiful.  This is the empowering of women.

Badiah-Nailah Blackman ft shensea
https://youtu.be/6VrmWNfVh4M
This song is of the category of Soca.  It main purpose of creation is to not only make money and fame, but to contribute to carnival.  It promotes that women at carnival should enjoy themselves, and dance as they see fit to the music, and not to just stand there and watch, but to let the music free them.  Overall, it is a very fun song, that empowers caribbean women not to feel ashamed of their culture and to not be afraid to embrace it.  During the majority of the video, it is  set in a night time/ evening setting, to make it more seductive to encapture the embodiment of how carnival or caribbean dancing is in the way that they are dressed and dancing.  It also shows parts of what living in the Caribbean is like.  This is more of a grey area, can be seen as both empowerment and exploitation.

Crossover-Tommy Lee Sparta ft Sean Kingston
https://youtu.be/XG7Kbr3sJaM
This music video essentially shows the "thug life" side of things.  That once you are in the game and involved in that related lifestyle, you must have loyalty to your "niggas".  This encourages young men to envision this lifestyle as something to aspire to, especially as you see they are smoking weed, lots of money and lots of women.  This also reinforces the stereotype that black men are already represented as.  The dim lighting also connotes to the darkness of the deeds that they are committing.  overall, the music video holds a negative connotation although it could be bringing to light the issues that young men are faced with to survive in their own community.  Also, the women in This video are being exploited rather than empowered as all of them are depicted as strippers.

Iran-Iraq earthquake: hundreds killed as border region hit

A 7.3 magnitude earthquake has killed at least 396 people and has injured at least thousands more.  This has been declared the deadliest earthquake this year.  Most of those who died were in Iran's western Kermanshah province where a search of survivors had started.

Unfortunately as well, the town's main hospital was severely damaged as well, leaving it struggling to treat hundreds of the injured.  Rescue teams hindered by landslides, making it harder to rescue persons or to search for any survivors.

As this has recently happened there are unfortunately not a lot of updates on the tragedy.

Hopefully, other countries will support Iran-Iraq, instead of leaving them in their current state or destroying them even more while they are down.  But seeing as Iraq-Iran is known to be prone to earthquakes, they should put reinforcements in place so as to ensure when events like this take place that there will be less damage and consequences.

Youtube is to restrict  the availability of videos showing children's characters in violent or sexual scenes if they are reported by viewers.

Last week a blogger by the name of James bridle highlighted that youtube was still being swamped with indecent and bizarre scenes aimed at children.

The site begs to differ saying that it already stops those particular videos from earning advertising revenue, as its team was made up of " parents who are committed to improving our apps and getting this right.

The issue of these content creators using poplar children cartoons in violent and sexualised ways to frighten children has been widely reported.  It appeared that such videos had been algorithmically generated to capitalise on popular trends.

Age-restricted videos are blocked from appearing in the youtube kids app and can only be accessed if logged in with an adult account.

A report from the New York Times had reported that inappropriate videos had still slipped through the net previously.

Youtube claims that it uses human reviewers to evaluate whether flagged videos are appropriate for a family audience.  But in the post Mr Bridle stated that he does not know how youtube will be abel to stamp out the issue and therefore protect the youths from seeing too much before their time.

Overall, i do not think youtube will be able to 100% be able to stop these things from happening, but they may be able to set certain procedures in place to lessen the chances.  Parent(s)/ guardian(s) will have to monitor their children and what they watch more in attempts to protect their innocence.

Representation of national and regional identity

The national or regional identity that is represented in media, varies on the location.  It is often the focus  on certain stereotypical characteristics and customs associated with the nation or region.

Examples of the different representations of different cultural backgrounds and areas are;

The house wives series;  This shows the "wives" of particular areas and the way that they behave.  A more specific example is house wives of atlanta, it shows mostly if not an all black woman cast.  It shows the relationships that the women have with each other and others that they encounter in their everyday lives.  It does not necessarily represent black women as struggling or in poverty or as a minority but as rich, loud, ratchet and constantly "angry" or fighting.  Therefore putting them in the known stereotype for black women.

The london riots which happened most violently in the area of croydon, this originated in north london over the shooting of a man by the name of dougan and then it trickled down.  This helped to reinforce the overall outlook that most person have on croydon.  A dangerous area, in which crime rates are high and the people(mainly the youths) are violent and rebellious.

The ice bucket challenge funded an ALS breakthrough, this was a social media campaign, which took place in the summer of 2015, helped to fund the breakthrough in ALS research of 2016.  This helped to bring more awareness to the disease and to bring a lot of persons from around the world together for a cause.  Although, persons did have their criticism about the campaign and called it "slactivism" as well as persons or areas that did not partake may have been "demonised", but the overall impact of the event was that of a positive notion.

These show both a positive and negative notion of regional and national areas.  In my opinion, it does not matter about the area but the persons themselves, why certain things take place.

http://www.mirror.co.uk/tv/tv-news/morning-viewers-furious-racist-school-11177283 - This story was posted on the newspaper 'Mirror's' website after being seen on the TV show 'This Morning' about a 12 year old school boy being told that he was banned from a school because he had dreadlocks.

Tuesday said her son's hairstyle was "not an issue" and she had met the headmaster on several occasions without his dreadlocks being mentioned.

She said: "I'm a strict mum. Before he even went to the school he spent an entire day in the school. Nothing was said to me, I sat down and downloaded the policy and nothing was said about dreadlocks".

Chickayzea, who had not been given permission to miss school for the interview, revealed the trauma of being taken out of class during his first week at secondary school.

The year seven pupil said: "I was in class and then my head of house came in and asked me if I can come out of class for a second and she told me that by Monday my hair was to be cut.

"I was upset and a bit worried because I really wanted to go to that school."

weekly news

Source is BBC news.

A Labour activist who accused an MP of sexual harassment has told the BBC she feels disillusioned by how the party handled it.
Ava Etemadzadeh, 27, said she was left feeling "very powerless and isolated" after Kelvin Hopkins was promoted the year after she complained about him.
The MP has now been suspended by Labour while it investigates the allegations.
The party says it takes such complaints "extremely seriously". Mr Hopkins has not commented on the allegations.
Ms Etemadzadeh claims the Luton North MP made inappropriate physical contact while hugging her, after she had invited him to speak at a university event in 2014, which "made me feel extremely uncomfortable".

'Shocked'

"The second incident was in Parliament when I went to have a conversation and he told me that 'let's not talk about politics, do you have a boyfriend?'," she told BBC News.
"And he also said that if nobody was in his office he would've taken me there. I was absolutely shocked and I wasn't really expecting that."
After refusing to respond to his phone calls, she claimed he sent her a message "saying that I'm an attractive, lovely young woman and a man would be lucky to have me as a lover and if he was young ... but he's not".
Some months later she raised concerns about Mr Hopkins' conduct with another Labour MP and her complaint was passed to the party's then chief whip Dame Rosie Winterton, who responded to it.

Reprimanded

But Ms Etemadzadeh said she was told she would have to waive her anonymity for action to be taken and the prospect of this "scared" her.
It is understood Mr Hopkins, 76, was verbally reprimanded about his alleged behaviour.
But he went on to be promoted, albeit briefly, to Labour's front bench in June 2016 - shortly after leader Jeremy Corbyn faced mass resignations following the EU referendum.
Image copyright PA
Image caption Mr Hopkins has been MP for Luton North since 1997
Ms Etemadzadeh told the BBC she believed that the Labour leader's office had been contacted about the complaint "and it was ignored".
"I'm very disillusioned because just a few months later I realised that Jeremy Corbyn promoted Kelvin Hopkins to the shadow cabinet, despite the fact that the leader's office was aware of this and they refused to act and that made me feel very powerless and isolated and alone."

Formal procedure

She said she had gone back to the party this week and raised it again but was told she would have to make a complaint through a formal procedure, via its National Executive Committee.
Then she was contacted by a party official and asked to detail her complaints in writing but was warned the procedure would take a few days.
She says that within hours the party contacted to her to say that they were suspending Mr Hopkins, shortly before the Telegraph published her allegations.
Labour Leader Jeremy Corbyn declined to answer questions from reporters about Mr Hopkins's promotion on Friday morning.
BBC political correspondent Iain Watson said he understood that Mr Corbyn was aware that a complaint had been made against Mr Hopkins when he promoted him but was not aware of the full details and was told the matter had been closed.

In my opinion although In certain situations he was quite inappropriate with her.  She sounds as if she has over exaggerated the situation.  Also, it seems as if the parliament party is not actually taking her claims seriously, and they are making excuses for the situation.  Overall, this does not give a good look in regards of the party, based on their representatives behaviour.

Representation of events

Positive representation of events;

The Royal wedding.  This event was shown as exclusive, expensive and was made to seem important.  They only showed the positive side that happened at the event rather than the negatives because the Royal family needs to be seen at a certain standard.

Football, which is also aired on television live, they only ever show clips of supportive fans and the game.  Conveniently avoiding the negatives sides that the fans and even the players show.

Negative representation of events;

Raves are seen as negative because of the behaviour of those involved, and also the presumed activities that take place, and that the raves are cover up for transactions that are actually taking place.

Carnival is another example of a negative representation of an event in the media, the media normally shows and reports most of the negative rather than the positives to carnival. They more show reports of stabbings, robbery, acid attacks etc rather than persons having a good time and enjoying themselves.  This is most likely done to fulfill an ulterior motive.

Representation of issues

Negative representation of issues;

The media has placed a negative representation on certain issues such as the LGBT community for an example.  Most see the LGBT as if they were a "disease", some are open about it but still prefer to not be affiliated.  An example of this are when persons who are in the LGBT are bullied or killed.

Another issue is that of the care shown in care homes for the elderly is that the elderly are taken advantage of in their vulnerable state, and abused.

Positive representation of issues;

Women and girls all over the world have been speaking about their experiences of sexual assault forming the hashtag me too.  This brings light to the issues that women face no matter how little or small it is.

Another positive representation of an issue is #blacklivesmatter.  Because of all the issues affecting the black community they banded together to fight against the ill treatment and issues.

Representation of age

Positive and negative representation of the elderly in the media;

Are used to appeal to families as they are depicted as family oriented nd friendly, as represented in advertisements and programmes.  For example; Pets4Home

Are often represented as weak, sick, fragile and vulnerable. For example; LifeAlert

Old age is often shown as taboo, this can be concluded based on the advertisements of anti-aging creams and ointments that have been created.  For example; L'oreal.

Positive and negative representation of the youth in the media;

Young people are often represented as rebellious and rude, and just going through a phase as they try to "find" themselves.  For example, The movie mean girls.

While others are represented as studious and school orientated.  These are often shown known as "nerds".

Representation of women

Synopsis;  Headhunters is a 2011 Norwegian action thriller film, based on the 2008 novel of the same name by Jo Nesbø. The film was directed by Morten Tyldum and stars Aksel Hennie, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Synnøve Macody Lund. Hennie portrays the successful but insecure corporate recruiter Roger Brown who lives a double life as an art thief to fund his lavish lifestyle. He finds out that one of his job prospects is in possession of a valuable painting and sets out to steal it.

Although the representation of women within the movie was rather inadequate, the few women starred within the film played quite significant roles.  The way they were portrayed though was quite unflattering, and giving in the stereotype of women.  For example;

Diana, at first she is made to seem materialistic and quite the flirt with other men.  But as the plot continues she is then portrayed as clingy when she keeps on asking him to have a child with her, and when he refused she slept with another man.  Also, at one point within the film it is made to seem as if she was in on trying to kill her husband.  Only at the end of the film is she portrayed as loyal to her husband and quite a strong women, but even then through out the whole film she is seen as submissive.  This portrayal of her only shows that women care for only material things and that's what makes them happy and that when a woman does not get her own way for the littlest of things she will go out of her way and do the most, and betray who is necessary to get what they want.

Lotte, she is depicted as obsessed with the main character and she is also whom he is having an affair with.  She again is depicted as submissive, obsessive, easy to get with and vulnerable.  Even though this was all a ploy just to help kill the main character, which she failed at doing she was still portrayed in an unflattering way.  This shows that in relationships women are seen as clingy and obsessive and willing to be or try to be with a man that is already in a relationship with someone else.

Natasja; was a Russian prostitute that was within the movie.  She is then obviously depicted as sexual and easily bought.  This again is a unflattering representation of women.  That when "bought" can be used to fulfill the pleasures of men.

Overall the movie was interesting and very well produced but the representation of women was below sub-par.

Government looking to speed up house buying process

My source is the Independent.

The ministers plan to launch a probe into unscrupulous home-buying practices where people who have already put down an offer on a property can be out bid by rival buyers.

Communities secretary Sajid Javid has asked for views on this custom, known as gazumping, as a way of making house buying and selling cheaper, faster and less stressful.

This consultation will also consider the boosting of confidence within the housing chain through "lock in agreements" to prevent purchases falling through, as official figures show a quarter of sales collapse each year.

Buying a home is on of life's largest investments therefore if it goes wrong it can be costly and stressful, that's why they are determined to make it as stress free, faster and cheaper as possible.

I believe that this would be a great idea for the economy and for persons in one sense but in another sense, if prices for houses are too cheap there can be a loss of economies of scale and if rivals can out bid each other that can also put a lot of persons off from wanting to buy a house.

The 8 questions

The five slogans for products recently advertised are; Finger lick in' good by KFC, I'm lovin' it by McDonalds, just do it by Nike, Because i'm worth it by L'Oreal and once you pop you can't stop by pringles.

Advertisers that have used shock tactics lately are; Benetton and Barnados.  The reason why they are shocking is because: the adverts contain content that you would not expect and therefore has an effective impact upon the viewer.

An advert that justifies Maslow's Hierarchy of needs in play is in Mercedes Benz.  It was used to lull consumers into believing they are buying into a better life in this way.

Stereotypes found in different adverts are; the portraying of black men as thugs or gangster as well as violent or dangerous in the advert welcome to the jungle.  The use of white women as a standard of beauty therefore fulfilling the stereotype of white or fair skinned women as the standard of beauty as seen in the newest Dove campaign.

An example of intertextuality in an advert are the many adverts created by specsavers over the years.

There are many different used of music or the lack of in lots of adverts such as; welcome to the jungle, this is where there is no sounds which adds a very eery effect and ties in perfectly with the end of the advert.  The music normally used in Barnados is very slow and mostly instrumentals so as to invoke a feeling of sadness or guilt.

An example of an elite person in a current advertising campaign; is the use of Kendall Jenner in the pepsi campaign, they did this so as to make their brand more popular and make it seem more elite, even though the response was quite the opposite.

Five examples of "reward and punishment" persuasion in current; Face cream that will keep you "young looking" by Pantene.  Iams cat food where they basically say if you feed your cat Iams you are a good owner if not then you are a bad one.  In Lynx they are saying to men if you use their product you will attract a lot of females but fin to then you will be alone for ever.  The way apple advertises is that is you buy their product you will be exclusive or elite but if you do not then you will be an outcast.

Hospital to ban "supersized" chocolate bars

"Supersized" chocolate bars are to be banished from hospital shops, canteens and vending machines, NHS England says.

Sweets and chocolate sold in hospitals should be 250 calories or under, the head of the body says.

Under the plans, most "grab bags" will be banned - with hospitals given a cash boost for facilitating the change.

The proposals would also see 75% of pre-packed sandwiches coming in at under 400 calories.

Pre-packed savoury meals and sandwiches must also contain no more than 5g of saturated fat per 100g.

And 80% of the drinks stocked must have less than 5g of added sugar per 100ml.

This is to combat the "obesity epidemic", preventable diabetes, tooth decay, heart disease and cancer.  As much as this may be effective inside of the hospital, if the patients are more familiar to living an unhealthy lifestyle then when they leave the hospital all the hospital efforts would of been useless.

So this decision can go 50/50, it depends on the patient what kind of lifestyle they live, and if they would continue the "healthy lifestyle" or not, but the hospital's efforts are a nice gesture to the health of society.

BREATHE Review

The synopsis of the movie is; Multiple award winner Andy Serkis directs his feature debut with an incredible story of a man who made a huge impact on mobility and access for the disabled in 1960s Britain.  Young Englishman Robin Cavendish (Andrew Garfield) is paralysed from the neck down by polio whilst in Africa.  Against medical advice, Robin decides to leave hospital, lead a normal life alongside his family, and fight for improving the lives of other disabled people.  Based on the true story of producer Jonathan Cavendish's own parents, BREATHE is an inspirational and heart-warming celebration of bravery and human possibility.

This picture depicts the interviewing of Jonathon Cavendish after the showing of the film.  A few of the audience was able to ask questions as well.

Overall, the movie was well put together and was very inspiring and emotional.  It showed that at any moment in time your life can change and be impacted forever and also impact the ones around you and closest to you. I believe this will help to influence and change the way that some people still view disabled persons.

This advert is done by an organisation that helps children in problematic home situations.  It depicts a child whom is listening to their parents arguing and becomes distraught and hides in a cupboard under the stairs.

Close-up shots and high-angle shots are used to connote the child as innocent and vulnerable.  Therefore causing a sense of sympathy and guilt on behalf of the child.  The dim lighting used causes a sense of darkness and foreboding for the child's future.  The sounds used coincide with visual aspects of the advert, therefore giving more information about the home situation of the child.  The soft but urgent voice of the narrator causes a sense of emotion, a sense of prompting and convincing so as to reach out to help the child in some way.

Even though the advert was very prompting and convincing, it did not really say how it helps the children or what the organisation is really about or how it functions, etc.

Pantene Gold series (Advert analysis)

On the 22nd March 2017, Pantene presents a poetic celebration of black women's hair elevating it to a standard and appreciating it as not seen in mainstream beauty media. It features women and girls who are beautiful, confident, vibrant and elegant and who draw personal strength from their hair whether it be long or short, natural or chemicalised- its texture, its style and its history.

The advert shows a series of shots and angles that go along with the voice-over being used. It mostly uses close-up shots so as to connote emotions and intensify each scene.  The advert uses medium close-ups to show more of each persons body and the fluidity of their body to coincide with the narrative of the advert.  High-angle shots are used to make the characters whom range from a variety of ages and sizes to seem vulnerable and naked while also using low-angle shots to make them seem confident and superior.

The use of voice-over in the background goes perfectly with the pictorial movements of the advert and coincides with the constant change in lighting which provokes emotion, preferably a sense of confidence and self worth, especially for black women and maybe also men.

More companies should do as pantene as have, and encourage the appreciation and elevating of black women and other ethnicites as well.  So as to create unity and self-love and decrease discrimination and the constant comparing of women on a day to day basis.

Is the Dove 2017 campaign "racist"?

This source is from the Guardian.

Dove newest advert has sparked mostly outraged and controversy.  It depicts a black woman taking off a shirt that matches her skin tone and transforms into a white woman who then transforms into a middle eastern woman.  What sparks even more outrage is the fact that on the Dove cream bottle it says "nourishing lotion for normal to dark skin.

Let's start off with the fact that on their bottle it has from normal to dark skin, what is meant by normal skin? what exactly is normal skin, this denotes that lighter skin or white skin is normal while dark skin is not.  Therefore, discriminating against women of colour and degrading black women as has been done for hundreds of years, and making lighter or white skin as a standard of beauty, therefore in a sense encouraging the notion of black women bleaching their skin to fit an "ideal" standard.

Even though they depicted a white woman transforming into a middle eastern woman, middle eastern women still do not get as much hate or are degraded as much as black women are.  This makes it seem as if black women are not comfortable in their own skin and want to be like white women or that they want to look like them.  Even though, this may be the case for some, it is not the case for all, and it encourages the never ending discrimination and under-valuing of black women, from the texture of hair to the colour of skin to the very features, that are only acceptable on other ethnicities.

In my opinion, this advert was racist whether that was the intention or not.  It can cause the continuation of under-valuing of black women and fuel the insecurities that happen from since young.  Even though Dove did issue an apology, it still did not come across as half-hearted and as far as i have seen it may not have been taken down.  I can only hope that Dove can learn from its mistakes and do better in the future.

Encoding VS Decoding

The way in which media represents aspects of society, issues and events is very influential and powerful, it links directly to the way in which audiences interpret, understand and respond to these areas.

The repetitive of a particular representation by a media product over time has the effect of making it 'appear' normal.  For example; the covers of women magazines continually offer a unrealistic representations of perfect women.

Encoding: The producers of a media product use media language to garble(encode) ideas and messages through the representations that are constructed within the product, or in other terms ideas and messages communicated through a system of signs.

Decoding:  The audience is then to decipher(decode) these messages and respond to them in a range of different ways or in other terms, this is the process by which an audience interprets a message.  This is also when the audience extracts from it only what matters to them.

Therefore, in conclusion, encoding and decoding are very important in the world of media, because it is the relationship between the audience and the creator.

Maslow hierarchy of needs

Maslow's hierarchy was created by Abraham Maslow in 1943.  He split the needs of people into five sections.  Those being physiological needs, safety needs, belongingness and love needs, esteem needs and self-actualization.

Biological and physiological needs: This is needs such as air, food, drink, shelter, warmth, sex and sleep.  This is the basic needs that every human needs to survive day to day.

Safety needs: This is the protection from elements, security, order, law, stability, etc.  This is also a basic need that someone has, that will help them to function on a day to day basis.

Belongingness and love needs: This is intimate relationships or friends that someone has at least once in their life.  This is a psychological need, this is the comfort and recognition that most want from their peers or simply from those around them.

Esteem needs:  This is the feeling of prestige or a sense of accomplishment.  This is a psychological need.  This is when someone feels as if they have achieved something in their life and therefore feel better about themself.

Self- actualisation: This is when someone achieves their full potential including that of creative activities.  This the self-fulfilment and the seeking of personal growth and peak experiences.

In conclusion, a person has a variety of basic needs on different levels in order for them to grow and develop and to reach their full potential.

How shot types and angles create meaning

                                                                           Camera Shots

Camera shots are a range of shots that are usually used to create specific techniques.  They range from a wide variety of shots such as;

Close-ups: This is used to create emotion and tension.  For example the close-up on a character's face makes the audience feel more involved with the character.  It can be a way of creating an impersonal relationship between the character and the viewer.

Extreme close-ups: This is used to create suspense or to draw attention to something important that will be used later in the narrative.  For example; this is mostly used in drama, action or horror movies.

Long shots: Used where more information about the character or situation is required.  This is where the audience may be shown the characters and part of their surroundings to enhance the understanding. For example; this may be used in a crime scene.

Medium close-ups: This is also known as 'newsreader shots'.  This a shot from the shoulders up that would normally be used by a news anchor.  This shot is therefore related to a specific genre.

Establishing shots: This is a rapid ways of advancing the narrative by showing the audience where the action is about to take place.  This gives the audience an expectation of what will happen next and this normally enhance their pleasure.  For example; the use of shots of washington in films such as CSI cyber.

                                                              Camera angles

A high-angle shot: This shot is normally used to make a character to appear vulnerable, innocent or insignificant.  This is normally seen from an aerial or bird's eye point of view.  For example; in action films or film sequences such as a car chase, so as to allow the viewers to see what was fully happening.

A low-angle shot: This shot of a character or object will create a sense of power and dominance.  For example; this is used in the marketing campaign for the 2016 Paralympics and it made the subjects appear strong and powerful and challenged the misconception of disability, helping to meet the campaign's slogan 'Meet the Super humans'.

In conclusion, different angles and shots are used depending on the scenario.  Therefore meaning that certain shots and angles are best suited for certain scenarios, etc.

Man vs Doll

The source from which the following was retrieved from is BBC News.

A thirty three year old man by the name of Simon Glerum was given a twelve month prison sentence and suspended for two years, as well as put on a five year sexual harm prevention order and a sex offender treatment programme as well as the doll being destroyed, for the following act that he would of gotten away with lest it had not been intercepted.

Mr Simon Glerum had purchased a anatomically realistic child like sex doll which came with accessories such as; hair, a hair brush and fingernails from Hong Kong which it was fortunately intercepted at the Stanford airport in January.  Not only that but he also admitted to the sickening act of not only importing the indecent or obscene doll but to also to the possession of indecent images of children.

The relevance of this is to show how serious this subject is and that it is a dark and disgusting reality that is enacted by persons.  It also brings awareness to this issue and it also indicates the increased and possible offences that can and are being committed against children.

Cross reference advertising

Cross reference advertising is the use of different social media platforms to advertise a service or a product.  For example a company may decide to use the radio and posters to advertise a particular product.

So cross reference advertising enables a business or an individual the ability to reach a larger audience and customer base.  For example while the elderly may read newspapers and listen to the radio the youth would most likely watch television and use apps on their smartphones to learn about new products or services.  Another reason is that certain platforms appeal more to certain people, therefore those particular persons would be more likely to watch the advertisement therefore gaining more public acknowledgement,

So much public exposure can help the individual or business to make a profit.  For example, so much exposure of a service or a product on several social media platforms will reach a wide range of audience thus increasing sales or income.

The use of so many platforms can be quite expensive and can cause damage to the revenue of the business or individual.  For example, if a business is just breaking even or making a loss, the use of money for so many platforms can cause a dent in the revenue of the business.

If an advertisement connotes a negative message, then it being advertised on so many platforms means that it will be seen by so many persons and have a negative effect on them.  For example, if a business or individual uses an advertisement that encourages crime then that can influence persons negatively and encourage them to become involved in crime.

Even if a company or individual was to use more than one platform of media, it still won't reach 100% of the population.  For example, if a company uses posters, newspapers and the radio to advertise a product or service, it might not get to those who watch the television.

Therefore, in conclusion, I believe that it is effective and positive because it can reach a wide scale of the public.

Welcome to the Jungle

In the beginning of the advert, the scenery is that of the dead of night when everything tends to come to life as is seen through out the video, this adds a mysterious air to the scenery with a splash of light in the background to add a refreshing burst of colour.

One of the opening scenes depicts a group of black men being depicted as thugs from the way they are dressed in sagging sweatpants and heavy gold chains around their necks to the aggressive dogs being held back by gold leashes to match their master while the white men were depicted in suits and riding in limozines and throwing away money as if it were water.  It sheds light on stereotypes that black men are shown as thugs, gangster and ghetto while that of which white men are shown as rich, arrogant and sophisticated.  This connotes the difference in how white men are portrayed and how black men are portrayed on social media.

Even though in the video both sets of women were being sexualised it was in contrasting ways; the biracial/black women were clothed and portrayed themselves in seductive/provocative ways while the white women were dressed poshly and had an air of "elegance" around them giving them a sense of  classiness.  The white women were also seen as models depicting them as a certain standard of beauty, while the black women were portrayed as very sexual in the way they dressed and danced therefore making them seem easy and low class. The main character whom was viewing each scene, was a white woman who was made to appear angelic and vulnerable in the end of the advert who was "rescued" by a white man, therefore depicting the "blonde hair blue eyes innocence" scenario.

The men in the advert were shown as strong, independent and wealthy, for example; the black men had thick gold chains around their necks and gold teeth and the white men were seen throwing money wastefully from the top of buildings or they were seen dressed in suits showing them as wealthy or as business men.  All the while women the women were being sexualised, from the way they dressed to their behaviour, they were also shown as gold diggers, as they hung onto a rich man even though their facial expression looked as if they were crying for help whilst in the limozine.

The entire video is mostly silent except for the instrumental which mainly repeats the title of the advert and speaks about wealth, this is orchestrated so as to tie in with the ending which says "bring the quiet".  The camera angles are made to be shown from a first person perspective so as to give a more intimate feeling between the creator and the audience, as the advert transitioned from one scene to the next.  The lighting in the advert is generally dark except for outbursts of bright lights to add life, but it is not until the ending when we switch to a second person perspective and we see whose eyes we were viewing the events through, as we near the ending the scenery get lighter and assumes a very angelic vybe.

Overall I would say that it was very put together and captivity advert with entrancing music, that made me want to buy what ever it is that they were selling.
